In EuroSea, the development of best practices and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for gliders will help setting up a glider network in phase with the international programmes, support the EuroGOOS Glider Task Team and EOOS, as well as the G7 recommendations on gliders. This will improve glider coordination at the European level through EuroGOOS and its regional systems, ROOS, and foster integration in GOOS.

During the OceanGliders Best Practice Workshop in May 2021 several SOPs were drafted by the global glider community. The 2nd SOP, namely for salinity, is now online available and open for community review until 28 February 2022.

The community review will be public, open, and transparent to receive a GOOS endorsement as described in Hermes 2020. The review will be facilitated on GitHub.

How you can contribute is described here. We encourage both experts and new glider users who want to start observing salinity to provide feedback on the document. Examples: experts are welcome to critically assess the specific methods and uncertainty ranges outlined in the SOP, and new users can help to improve the SOP by providing feedback from the user perspective.

SOPs for Nitrate and Depth Average Currents (DACs) will be uploaded towards the end of 2021. The oxygen SOP is already in community review.
